Are You Sure You Want to Delete These Files?

The other day, I sat down at the computer. With the best of intentions. I was going to back up my hard drive, like I do every year. You probably know where this is going. Yep, it happened. To me, for the first time in how many years of playing and working with computers?.

I stuck a thumb drive in and navigated to it and highlighted everything on it and hit delete. Oh no, I wasn’t on my thumb drive. I just deleted all the data on my hard drive!

I use Linux without the comfortable “Trash” folder that Windows has. So, recovering the data was a little trickier, but doable. It just took me 2 weeks on the learning curve, but I got everything back.

Then yesterday, I got one of those epiphanies that drive you crazy (well, they do me anyway). Yeah, I know computers have been flying commercial air liners for probably 20 years. But driver-less cars have not met the standards set by commercial air travel. I mean, there have already been several fatalities, injuries and malfunctions and we’re still in the testing phase. Last week, that saucy wench on Google took me to within 5 miles of Tony’s wedding reception. But, it was the wrong place, 5 miles away.

Do you really want a driver-less car who’s brain can be deleted with the push of a wrong button?

From your grumpy Uncle Dave.
